Minmus is a small moon orbiting kerbin as well as the smaller sibling of the the mun. from kerbin it can be seen as a tiny greenish dot in the sky. minmus minmus\'s surface is covered in flat plains of glass between rocky highlands. minmus has a slightly glossy appearance which makes it look somewhat icy. its slightly inclined orbit makes it more challenging to intercept than the mun but requires overall less delta-v to reach its surface. two primary missions are focused on minmus. they involve placing a probe in orbit around minmus to resolve a signal found on its surface followed by an investigation of the minmus monument.

Synopsis

Kerbin's second moon minmus was long overlooked as most believed it was only a dead pixel or dust much like gilly. despite the challenges of visiting it in its slightly inclined orbit scientists were eager to study minmus fascinating geology especially after seeing its impossible ice-like surface. further analysis led researchers to conclude that the "ice" is actually glass, much to the dismay of minmus's mystic crunch milkshakes.

Surface

minmus's surface is very strange. the mint-colored surface is made of crushed silicon and shocked quartz giving it its strange glossy appearance. only trace amounts of water ice have been found on minmus but probably not enough to sustain a colony of kerbals . the flat plains or "sheet ice" of minmus are almost purely glass composed mainly of silicon and quartz which has been melted and solidified over many thousands of years. the plains have a dark greenish-blue color mainly due to how light is scattered by the surface. there are relatively few impact craters on minmus and they seem to be much smoother than the ones on the mun. the process behind this observation is not entirely clear. like the mun it experiences dramatic temperature variations throughout its day. origin origin origin some theories regarding minmus minmus\'s origin is that it may have either formed naturally around kerbin or was captured later on. based on the bizarre geology of minmus it it\'s more likely that it was captured around kerbin kerbin\'s gravity. since it lacks any ice or dust particles escaping from it minmus probably does not have a cometary origin.

The minmus monument is the second important location visited in exploration mode. the monument depicts a non-kerbal intelligent species and it seems to be built from the surrounding material. the identity of the figure is not known yet.

Trivia

  • in ksp1 minmus was originally an icy moon with frozen lakes and high mesas. since the ksp2 devs could not figure out how an icy composition would be possible at minmus's distance from kerbol without the ice sublimating and escaping while keeping its characteristic icy look they decided on a more exotic surface composition.
  • the names of the surface regions of minmus allude to it being icy or snowy. this is probably in reference to how kerbals initially believed that minmus is icy and the names therefore must have stuck since.
  • minmus is one of the only two moons that are not tidally locked to their parent planet, the other being gilly.
